At Carden Hall, we believe that children thrive when they feel known, capable, and successful. Miss Carden's carefully designed, step-by-step curriculum creates a supportive learning environment where each child experiences steady growth and meaningful achievement. By introducing new concepts at the appropriate pace and reinforcing them through consistent practice, students develop both competence and self-assurance as they master increasingly complex skills.
Through fifth grade, core academic subjects are taught in small groups, allowing teachers to provide personalized instruction and meaningful feedback. This approach encourages active participation, nurtures curiosity, and ensures that each child's unique strengths and learning needs receive thoughtful attention.
The Carden Method is distinguished not only by what students learn, but by how they learn. Rather than simply providing answers, our teachers guide students to think critically, reason logically, solve problems independently, and communicate with clarity and confidence. Miss Mae Carden: A Visionary Educator
Miss Mae Carden was an extraordinary educator, innovator, and pioneer who believed that every child possesses remarkable potential. She viewed each student as a unique individual with an innate capacity to learn and inspired both teachers and children to pursue excellence, intellectual curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning. At the heart of her philosophy was the belief that learning should be filled with delight. As Miss Carden often said, "Life is a joy; so should be learning!"
Raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, Miss Carden displayed a passion for teaching from an early age, often helping her classmates master new concepts. A gifted scholar, she earned her bachelor's degree from Vassar College at just 19 years of age before completing her master's degree at Columbia University.
Her education extended far beyond the classroom. Living in Europe for five years, she became fluent in French, German, and Italian while immersing herself in the continent's rich traditions of art, music, literature, and culture. Inspired by these experiences, she envisioned an educational approach that would nurture not only academic excellence but also beauty, character, and a genuine appreciation for the world around us.
In 1934, Miss Carden opened her first school in New York City. Convinced that children learn best in small, carefully guided classes, she developed an approach that combined high academic standards with encouragement, confidence building, and joyful discovery. When she found existing instructional materials inadequate for her vision, she began writing her own textbooks, readers, and workbooks. Throughout her life, she continually refined her curriculum and devoted herself to preparing faithful teachers to implement what became known as the Carden Method.
Miss Carden's influence reached far beyond New York. She spent many years visiting Carden Hall, where she taught lessons in every classroom and personally trained many of the school's original faculty members, including Mrs. Jane Jones and Mrs. Christy Jones Kalthoff. Her visits quickly became cherished occasions. Elegantly dressed in her signature hats and white gloves, Miss Carden brought both warmth and wisdom wherever she went. Students eagerly anticipated her arrival, knowing they would experience the joy, encouragement, and inspiration that defined her life's work.
Today, Miss Carden's legacy continues to flourish through generations of students whose lives have been shaped by her timeless belief that every child can succeed in an environment where excellence, confidence, character, and joy are intentionally cultivated.

The first aim of this education is to cultivate virtue. In immersing our students in timeless truths through the study of classical literature and history, we inspire them to love beauty, truth, and goodness, shaping their hearts and thus their habits and choices.
This education also nurtures their desire for wonder and cultivates a spirit of inquiry, creating life-long learners. A classical education holds value in a fast-changing world as it teaches students how to learn, not what to learn.
This traditional learning is “knowledge rich” rather than “facts full,” giving students a mastery of the literary arts, both reading and writing and thought and expression, the arts by which all further learning is made possible. In learning from these greatest works and highest thoughts, students and teachers come together in distinct, complimentary roles.
The greatest defense against the inevitable errors of our day is the perspective that comes with knowing what is beyond our time and what has been considered to be true through time. This anchors our students with timeless truths so that they are not tossed to and fro on the tide of fads and feelings.
